Thinking of becoming a beekeeper? "... until you are standing alone in your bee suit in your backyard and open a hive to a swarm of mad bees, or start breaking comb and killing bees, or inspecting your hive and your smoker goes out….nothing you read about or was told in a classroom will help you. You need a mentor and you need experience." Read the rest in Mentee Testimonial.
Don Studinski, dba Honeybee Keep, is a principal permaculture enthusiast at Living Systems Institute (LSI) where he applies permaculture philosophy to beekeeping. Apiaries under Don's management are located from Lakewood to Hygiene, 24 hives spanning about 50 miles. Don's beekeeping articles have been published in Bee Culture magazine and on-line at Honeybee Haven, Peak Prosperity and Selene River Press. As a beekeeping mentor, Don provides advice and counsel for students throughout the United States. Colorado Bees for Colorado Beekeepers is his latest project which will provide nucleus colonies for sale. Marla Spivak: "As a way of illustrating what bees are facing, Spivak tells a story. Imagine you have the flu (bee viruses). Then imagine, suffering from the flu, you have to go get food for your family across miles of a food desert (farm monocultures). Imagine that when you get there, the available food is laced with a neurotoxin that disorients you or knocks you out completely (neonicotinoid pesticides).
Oh, and by the way, there may very well be the equivalent of an enormous wood tick on your back sucking your blood throughout all of this (varroa mites). Now go back home and work hard for the rest of the day, and do the same thing tomorrow. That’s what we’re currently asking bees to do."

Honeybee Keep is using an out-of-the-ordinary business model. It's based on community sufficiencey technologies. Some folks have noticed what we are doing and have even chosen to blog about it. Here's another blog about it. Here's a third. This article was written for Chris Martenson by Don at Chris' request. My friend, Sid, also wrote about our work. Here's a student that blogs about the mentor program.
